Spring Foraging @ Fern Hollow Nature Center

May 3rd, 2015 11:00am - 1:00am

Italian immigrants brought to America the tradition of foraging for food in the wild. Learn about this time-honored practice of harvesting healthy, naturally grown food with Mary Menniti of The Italian Garden Project and Rosemarie Perla, SFP member and Teach a Community to Cook leader.

WHO: Bring the family and learn the basic rules of foraging, focusing on two highly nutritious and abundant greens that appear in early spring: dandelions and winter cress.

WHAT:  Mary will discuss optimal harvest time, plant identification, nutritional value and health benefits and where to look for good foraging spots. She'll lead participants on a brief foraging expedition and return inside where Rosemarie will show how to clean and prepare the freshly harvested greens to use in an Italian Frittata (egg omelet). Leave with an understanding of how to forage greens and how to prepare a simple, nutritious Italian Frittata for the family to cook and eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

WHERE: Fern Hollow Nature Center, Sewickley

1901 Glen Mitchell Road Sewickley, PA 15143
