On your plate: The very best of America's artisan cheese  Taste American Originals    Your guide: Wheel & Wedge's Alix Hoylman  An intimate classroom-style cheese tasting with good local sudz 6 pm Tues. June 19    Our hosts: Driftwood Oven in Lawrenceville 

With our guide Alix Hoylman, cheesemonger extraordinaire, we'll taste truly original American artisan cheese prizewinners like California's Red Hawk, a fragrant washed-rind triple-cream cow's milk from Cowgirl Creamery in Marin County; Vermont's Harbison, soft-ripened cow's milk, spruce-wrapped, made by Jasper Hill; Upland's Cheese's Rush Creek Reserve in Wisconsin, cow's milk cheese, made for scooping; Rogue Creamery's Smokey Blue, one of America's first blues and its first smoked blue (over Oregon hazelnut shells).   These and goat and sheep's milk cheeses on the tasting plate have won top honors over the years at the American Cheese Society annual judging. Several have won Best American Cheese.   Some you may have found in markets--but likely snugged in plastic wrap, perhaps less than pristine.   At this tasting you will meet the champions, freshly cut from the wheel, perfectly tended and at full glory. You'll learn where each fits in the American artisan cheese heaven--and how it got there.
