Gadgets and Canning Supplies
Great Starter Kit for canning - everything you need to get started-
Alternative Canning Rack - I use this in the bottom of my canner. It is usually used in the pressure canner, but I use it in my hot water bath canner. I dislike the traditional wire canner- especially for smaller jars I don't like how unsteady it is. I can fit about 8-9 pints or jelly jars in one canner load when I use this in the bottom of my canner. If you use this, be sure to leave at least some room around the jars - there needs to be adequate air/water space around the jars.
Waterproof Apron - I wear one similar to this when I am washing all of the dirty dishes that are created when canning - you can also get these fairly lightweight aprons at a hair salon supply store.
True Blue Gloves- Heat resistant gloves - also available a "In the Kitchen" in the Strip District
Chef'n Veggie Chop - Hand powered food processor. (this was demoed at the SFP Pickle canning workshop)
FREE!!!!! USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning - fullly downloadable as a .pdf file
FREE!!!!! University of Tennessee Canning Foods Book - available as a .pdf. Excellent for step by step procedures for "how-to" can.
Ball Complete Book of Home Canning - Large book that has "tons" of recipes. Good for a first canning book, but you can easily start with the "Ball Blue Book of Canning" (next book down)
Ball Blue Book of Canning & Preserving (available at local Target stores for around $7) - Smaller and less daunting that the Ball Complete book. A PERFECT starter book (in my opinion). Tons of pictures, detailed explanations and wonderful recipes.
